About Obed Medina

obed-medinaI am a gay Mexican-American writer. I grew up in Southern California, lived in Hollywood, and I’m currently living in Ashland, Oregon. I am a script reader for the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab and for the Ashland New Plays Festival. As a reader, I am part of a group that selects among the best plays for the year that deserve further workshop. As a writer (online and otherwise), I have worked in the entertainment industry as a film and theatre critic in the Greater Los Angeles area and have produced, directed, and written plays for 17 years.

Although I received my BA in Creative Writing, my work revolved around playwriting until now. I sat down to write a few experiences for a writing group in Oregon and found that I had a lot more to say than I thought I did. I am inspired by writers such as Alice Munro, Tennessee Williams, Joan Didion, and Annie Dillard. I tend to write a little each day, if only to flex that writing muscle.

I am intrigued by the idea of memory and how it distorts our perception of our own past. This blog will explore, in writing, incidents in my past as I remember them now. Instead of the standard personal essay, I am taking creative license to model these essays into a narrative that, I hope, will entertain the reader. Rather than producing the standard chronological memoir, I want to produce an emotional narrative. I’m attracted to the fragmented essay–the story that focuses on a scene. It’s a form of meditation. To quote Joe Wilkins, “fragments allow both lyric intensity and narrative development, and fragments maintain fidelity to the incomplete, leaping form that memory so frustratingly takes.” I’m shaping truths in a way that will help me make sense of my life. These writings are posted under the Creative Non-Fiction section of this blog. The other posts feature short flash fiction, short stories, and other short pieces.

Additionally, I am doing a year-long experiment on my journey toward publishing a memoir. I’m calling on anyone who finds my blog to help shape the draft of this memoir. For more details, please check out the details here.

I participate in the following online writing challenges:

  1. Hi there! I just discovered your blog via the #StoryDam chat linky list. Were you at chat last week? I hope to see you there this next week. Chats happen each Thursday night on Twitter at 8pm EST. Guess that’s 5pm over in Ashland. A handful of the peeps on #StoryDam (including me) are also working on memoirs. One in our group even teaches memoir classes and has been widely published.

I used to live in Wa state on a tiny island in the San Juans. I’ve never been to Ashland, although I would love to visit during the Shakespeare festival. Now I’m in Texas, so that would be quite a jaunt… Still, it could happen!

Anyway, I look forward to reading more posts from you! 🙂 If you’re ever on Twitter say hi (I’m @TuiSnider) or swing by my blog sometime.

    1. Welcome Tui! I have been meaning to join each week since I found StoryDam, but, you are right, I forget the time differences and always show up too late. 5 PM tomorrow I definitely want to meet up with some memoir writers 🙂 Thank you!

    1. Thank you very much! I’m honored!

  2. I’ve come to your blog by way of ‘The Speak Easy Yeah Write’ blog. I’ve enjoyed browsing.

    1. Thank you so much! I will certainly check it out
